ECU Senior Chess Championship 50+ 65+

THE TOURNAMENT

The Organizing Committee welcomes all senior chess players (50+ and 65+) from European countries to the European Senior Individual Chess Championship.

The event will take place in Acqui Terme (AL), Italy, from June 1st to 11th, 2026.

Admission is reserved for those who have reached the age of 50 or 65 by December 31st, 2026.

According to ECU regulations, the championship will be played in the following categories:

Open 50+, Women 50+, Open 65+, and Women 65+.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 10/05/2026

The organization’s goal is to combine a high-level chess event with the hospitality and wellness that distinguish the Italian territory, ensuring the highest quality standard.

The tournament schedule will be enriched by side events, such as a blitz tournament and tastings of local products.

This information package contains all the necessary details: affiliated hotels, technical regulations, and the registration form.

TECNICAL REGULATIONS

Format and Time Control

The Championship will be played over 9 rounds using the Swiss system.

  • Time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move one.
  • Default time: The maximum default time for the start of all games is 30 minutes.

Participation Requirements

Players regularly registered with their National Federation and in possession of a FIDE ID may participate.

Women’s and Open Categories

  • The women’s tournament (Women 50+ and Women 65+) will be held separately only upon reaching at least 9 registered players per category.
  • If the number of registered players in a category is less than 9, the female players will participate in the corresponding Open category, maintaining eligibility for women’s prizes.

Tournament Officials and Language Support

  • The ECU officials (Chief Arbiter, Deputy Arbiter, Appeals Committee and FIDE Technical Delegate) will be appointed by FIDE in due time.
  • The arbiter staff can assist players in the following languages: Italian, German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Danish, Greek.

Appeal Procedure

  • Any appeals, including those against decisions of the Chief Arbiter or Tournament Director, must be submitted in writ- ing to the Chairman of the Appeals Committee within one hour after the completion of the relevant game.
  • The appeal must be accompanied by a deposit of 200 EUR.
  • If the appeal is upheld, the deposit will be refunded; otherwise, it will be forfeited to the European Chess Union.
  • The decisions of the Appeals Committee are final.

Tie-Break Criteria

In case of tied scores, the ranking order will be determined by sequentially applying the following criteria:

  1. Direct encounters (sum of points in games between tied players); 2. Buchholz Cut 1;
  2. Buchholz;
  3. Greater number of games played with black;
  4. Greater number of wins.

For unplayed games, the current FIDE rules for tie-break calculation shall apply.

SPECIAL PRIZES - OPEN 65+

Over 75: Prizes for top 3 ranked players (born in 1951 or earlier).

SPECIAL ABSOLUTE PRIZE

The winners of Open 50+ and 65+ will receive a "complete package" for the Cap Negret Senior Tournament (Altea, Spain, 7-15 Nov 2026), including entry fee, board and lodging.

Prize allocation rules:

Each player can receive only one cash prize. Prize amounts will be equally divided in case of tied scores.

Prize giving ceremony: Attendance is mandatory. In case of unjustified absence, the cash prize will be reduced by 20% (minimum e 100.00). For subsequent collection of trophies or medals, a penalty of e 100.00 will be applied. Amounts withheld in these cases will be forfeited to the European Chess Union (ECU).

Bookings and Registration

  • Additional nights can be requested at proportional rates.
  • All participants and national delegations must register exclusively through the Organizing Committee.
  • Hotel bookings and visa invitations are handled exclusively by the Organizing Committee.

Registration Fees

  • Standard fee (by May 10, 2026): € 120,00 per person (including ECU fee).
  • Late fee (after May 10, 2026): € 170,00 per person.

What the Fee Includes

The registration fee includes: registration, accreditation, badge, ECU fee, guided tour of Acqui Terme and one wine tasting.

Accommodation Booking

  • It is strongly recommended to book at the affiliated hotel structures.
  • Players who choose alternative solutions will have to arrange their own transfers and will not be entitled to organizational support.

Required Deposit

  • For players: € 420,00 (€ 300,00 for accommodation + € 120,00 for registration)
  • For accompanying persons and officials: € 300,00 (only for accommodation and any transfers)

Payment Methods and Confirmation

  • The deposit must be paid free of bank charges to the recipient.
  • The payment receipt must be sent by email to the Organizing Committee.
  • Bookings will be confirmed only after full payment of the deposit.
  • The balance must be paid by the start of the second round, at the organization desk.
  • Payment methods accepted for the balance: cash (Euros) and VISA/MASTERCARD cards.

Important Notes

  • Incomplete registrations (with missing documentation or payment) will not be considered valid.
  • In case of invalid registration, paid fees will not be refunded.

Anti-Cheating Rules

The ECU guidelines against irregularities apply in full.
