As everyone knows, it's very difficult to determine the motivation that drives players to participate in one tournament rather than another: some come for the location, some for the playing conditions, some for the titles up for grabs, some for the prizes, and some because they know the organization is top-notch.
We believe this tournament attracted such a large number of players for a combination of all the aforementioned reasons.
We've already written extensively about Acqui Terme, the excellent playing room conditions, and the excellent organization; the titles up for grabs are those of European champion for each category, which also qualifies for a free place at the next World Senior Championships. The most anticipated prizes are, of course, the cash prizes, and €18,000 isn't bad at all.
The plaques and medals deserve a separate mention. Simple plaques were chosen for the three winners (again for each category) to avoid inconveniencing air travellers by offering bulky trophies.
Finally, the Organizers have also included special prizes for the top three over 75. These awards are a testament to the special attention our organization pays to those who, despite the ailments of age, love this game/sport and want to be there at all costs!
